Für die zehnte Klasse der Max-Born-Realschule in Dortmund ist es soweit: Die erste Klassenarbeit im Hauptfach Englisch steht auf dem Plan. Falk (15) und Alexandra (16) haben sich zum Üben verabredet. Sie treffen sich einen Tag vor der Arbeit bei Alexandra zu Hause. Lehr- und Wörterbücher kommen auf den Tisch, Vokabelhefte und Stifte. „Wir beginnen mit den Vokabeln, die wir in den letzten Wochen gelernt haben", schlägt Alexandra vor. „Oje, gleich zu Beginn Gehirnakrobatik", stöhnt Falk. Falk erzählt, dass die Schüler eigentlich selten zusammen üben. Viele aus der Klasse sind so genannte „Einzelkämpfer". Alexandra dagegen trifft sich ab und zu mit anderen Mitschülerinnen zum Üben. Zur Vorbereitung einer Klassenarbeit gehört bei vielen auch ein schlaues Schummel- und Spicksystem*, das man im Notfall befragen kann. Alexandra schreibt für Englisch Vokabeln, die sie sich nicht merken kann, auf winzige Zettel. Die versteckt sie unter den Stiften in der Stiftdose. In der Dose kleben auch kleine Zettel mit Formeln von der letzten Mathearbeit. Falk kritzelt kleine Bemerkungen ins Wörterbuch und lässt sich von Alexandra wichtige Vokabeln auf den Arm schreiben.
